And they need to be emotionally intelligent, and communicate well; finances can be stressful to business managers, and they should understand that giving support is as important as being able to receive it.

The best HR professionals understand that their role is to help build the company and to use necessary compliances to support growth.


They are individuals of integrity, diplomatic and able to ensure that the people around them do the right things in pursuit of success.


This means they need to analyse problems and resolve issues, and constantly seek to develop themselves because they absorb a considerable amount of pressure.


They need up-to-date knowledge and expertise in their field, because few outside the profession can keep abreast of changing employment laws. So, being the expert means they can protect their company and its employees from unwittingly falling foul of the law.


They are very organised, and get things done fast, so that staff and management feel well-supported and able to focus on their work.


Like good finance controllers, they also have a good grasp of the industry they work in and how to navigate issues so that their employer succeeds.


What makes an excellent Marketing professional?


Great marketing professionals know what the company aims to achieve, and have the creativity, analytical skills, marketing knowledge and communication skills to ensure marketing is used to help get them there.


Unlike many other professional positions, everyone seems to think they know about marketing, but few do. This makes the role of the marketeer one that needs great integrity; the ability to stick to what’s right and not get pushed into trying cheap tactics.


It's important to understand how the marketing profession works, too, and not to expect one person to be good at it all. Someone great at web development, for example, is going to be more analytical than someone who is a superb graphic designer. Neither is likely to be the best marketing manager, as this is a different set of skills again.
