Interview with Max Hodgson, Senior Recruitment Consultant

System Administrator

Max was recently promoted to Senior Consultant and as one of Amour's top billers, we thought we would take the opportunity to talk to him about his career in Recruitment so far.

When did you join Amour Recruitment?

April 2021

What was your perception of recruitment when you first started, to what it’s like in reality?

I started my career in recruitment in 2019 and I didn’t really know what to expect. As most recruitment consultants say, I fell into it! Other people’s perceptions were that it is very cutthroat business, with high KPIs. In reality, it can be both of those things if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing. But, if you want to succeed and do a good job for your clients, you will naturally do well, and you won’t have to worry about your job.

Tell me about the area you recruit for?

My go to is recruiting for logistics and the supply chain but I'm generally all round 360 recruiter. I find that the roles that I recruit for are the people behind the scenes that you do not see on a day-to-day basis, though without them, the show would not go on!

Tell me what makes someone the perfect candidate.

Communication! The more honest communication a candidate can have throughout the recruitment process, the higher the success of them finding a role. Also, it allows us to do our jobs right and fully brief candidates as to what to expect and help them through the whole process of the recruitment journey.

What skills do you bring to your clients and how do you match them with the perfect candidate?

Understanding of the client and communication. Visiting the site, meeting my client, and having a look around the environment where my candidate will be working is key. I start to understand who the hiring manager is looking for and appreciate where the recruitment process may have fallen before. Overall, it helps the process and leaves me with happy clients.

What has been your biggest highlight so far?

Getting my teeth stuck into the permanent division. Originally, I worked for the temporary side of the business, but permanent recruitment is my niche.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

Having down months. In recruitment you are naturally going to have months where the wheels can come off, placements full out, people do not turn up to interviews and jobs get cancelled. I have learnt how to adapt to this and keep my head up and, “just keep swimming.”

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Building my relationships with my clients. Once I really get to know my them, I can understand their recruitment process better for them and it’s a more enjoyable process.

How do you see your role developing over the next 5 years?

Hopefully if I continue to prove myself, the sky is the limit and I look forward to finding out what that could look like for me.

How would you clients and candidates describe you?

Outgoing, honest and reliable.

Who and what inspires you in life?

Successful people, I am very fortunate to know and work with very successful people who established themselves and became experts in the fields they have chosen. So, I inspire to be one of those people and to be able to look back on my career and be proud of what I have accomplished.

If you could give 3 tips to somebody joining the industry now, what would they be?

1.    Short term loss, long term gain. Work hard and give it your all.
2.    The more you practice that thing you hate doing, the easier it will become.
3.    You could put the same amount of effort into one week and smash all your targets, you could then put in the same amount of effort the following week and hit none of them. That’s just recruitment!

I hope you enjoyed the interview with Max, and it gives you an insight into the hidden side of recruitment and the hard work and passion that goes into matching the correct candidate to the perfect role.

As Max wisely says, ‘it’s all about communication,’ and the power to understand your client and their specific needs.
